This October, in a united effort to make a meaningful impact in their community during the Halloween spirits, Allen High School DECA held a Sandwich Making Event called “Spooks & Sandwiches” meant to benefit The Stewpot. The Stewpot is a local branch of the First Presbyterian Church of Dallas, and is the sole meal provider at the Bridge Homeless Recovery, which serves over 1,000 meals per day, 7 days a week, and provides breakfast, lunch and dinner for those in need.
Allen DECA Members were encouraged to bring a variety of bread, Peanut Butter, Jelly, Turkey, and Cheese, and formed assembly lines to make and package the sandwiches.
In a matter of two hours, over 130 sandwiches were made.
When one of Allen DECA’s fellow members was delivering the sandwiches to the Stewpot later that night, she learned that the kitchen staff makes over 75 Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches daily, and Allen DECA’s contributions were of great help! Beyond the warm feeling of giving back to the community in a tangible way, rather than just donating funds, Spooks & Sandwiches was a great bonding moment for DECA members and improved their collaborative spirits, a trait that is critical in the business world. Allen DECA looks forward to hosting a similar event for The Stewpot in the springtime as well!
How YOUR Chapter can contribute:
Every city has individuals who could greatly benefit from a free, wholesome meal, and your chapter can participate in efforts to feed the hungry. We recommend that you contact your regional Food Bank or search their website to see the shelters/organizations that they donate to, and directly reach out to those organizations, asking if they accept sandwich donations. Once you find a shelter, set a date, encourage members to bring different ingredients, play a movie or music in the background, and glove up to make some delicious sandwiches!
